“Say Say Say” was written and performed by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson. The song was produced by George Martin in 1983 for Pipes of Peace which was McCartney’s fifth solo album,
The song was recorded while producing McCartney’s 1982 Tug of War album, which was about a year before the release of “The Girl Is Mine”, their first duet from Michael’s 1982record-breaking album, Thriller.
“Say Say Say” became Michael’s seventh top-ten hit within a year after its release in October 1983. It was a number one hit in:
- United States
- Norway
- Sweden
It also reached number two in the United Kingdom, and hit the top ten in:
- Australia
- Austria
- New Zealand
- Netherlands
- Switzerland
It was Certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, and was promoted with a music video directed by Bob Giraldi.
Filmed in Santa Ynez Valley, California the video featured cameo appearances by Linda McCartney and La Toya Jackson. The video is about two con artists played by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson named “Mac and Jack” and is credited for the introduction of dialogue and storyline to music videos.
The video was considered by the National Coalition on Television Violence to be too violent for broadcast in the US.
