The video was edited from a Chinese masterpiece, the Long March Song Cycle (长征组歌) which was made in Feb 1976. The Long March was a massive military retreat undertaken by the Red Army of the Chinese Communist Party, escaped in a circling retreat to the west and north, which reportedly traversed some 12500 kilometers (8000 miles) over 370 days. Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the Long March has been glorified as an example of the Communist Party’s strength and resilience. The Long March Song Cycle was first performed in 1966.

But that video also bills itself as a bluray rip, but actually has the correct aspect ratio. So now I’m pretty thoroughly confused as to why this weird zoomed-in version even exists. :

@xMrLostmanx I’m glad I bought MJ’s Vision for normal DVD, because this would annoy me. Does the entire blu-ray collection do this to the other videos in the collection? If so I am glad I bought MJ’s Vision for normal DVD because this would not be worth the money. Screw the quality I want to see the whole thing!
@xMrLostmanx After a quick google search, IMDb cites that Moonwalker was originally recorded with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1, which is very similar to 16:9.
So yeah, with that in mind, this zoomed-in oddness is complete bullcrap.
@Mechasonicrocks My guess is that they made it that way so it could be “widescreen”. The original had an aspect ratio of 4:3 (if memory serves me correctly, there was never a widescreen aspect ratio version. It just wasn’t recorded that way.) What it looks like they did here is just zoomed in the image until the left and right edges of the original video touched against the outer edges of a 16:9 (widescreen) aspect ratio, which would cut off the top and bottom of the original.

It’s great, but why is the video zoomed in so much? This video crops off so much of the original video, and in certain parts you can’t see very much of anything. Is this because of youtube or is the blu-ray version cropped automatically?
