Dirty Diana
Released April 1988 “Dirty Diana” was the fifth and final No.1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 from Michael Jackson’s 1987 “Bad” Album. Unlike most of Michael’s music “Dirty Diana” had more of a hard rock sound like that of “Beat It” from the album “Thriller”.
‘Dirty Diana’ crossed over from pop into the rock genre with its rock sound, guitar licks, and lyrics of a predatory lover named Diana. Steve Stevens who was Billy Idol’s former guitarist played the rock sounding guitar licks on the track.
Initially there were rumors suggesting the song was inspired by a supposed affair between Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, this however was later denied. Quincy Jones later confirmed that it was about groupies in an interview on the special edition of “Bad”. In an interview with Barbara Walters Michael confirmed this also.
Although Michael said the song was also not about Princess Diana, he thought he’d have to remove it from his UK performance for fear of offending her.
Michael was however surprised to hear from Princess Diana herself that it was one of her personal favorites. Michael performed the song in the UK during the 1988 performance at Wembley Stadium in front of Princess Diana and Prince Charles.
Music video
The “Dirty Diana” video was shot in front of a live audience in early 1988. It starts out with Steve Stevens’ silhouette seen striking a guitar which produces a low reverberating sound. It then cuts to Michael as he begins to perform on the same stage in front of a live audience. As Michael performs the camera continues to cut from him to a woman walking down a dark alleyway, only her legs and lower body is shown.
As Steve Stevens plays some awesome rock licks on the guitar, Michael dances around ripping open his t-shirt at one point. As the camera moves to a different angle the audience can be seen holding up lighters.
After the concert is over Michael runs off stage, down some stairs and opens the door to a limo only to find a women sitting in the backseat. We can only assume its “Dirty Diana”.
The woman is the same women we saw early waling in the dark alleyway and although her face is never shown, it’ s actually musician and singer Sheryl Crow who was a backup singer for Michael at the time and had not yet made a name for herself.
At the 2nd ‘World Music Awards’ held on April 14, 1989 the video won the “Number One Video In The World” award.
